RURAL FIRE DEVELOPMENT FRAMEWORK (RFDF)

CREW LEADER PREPARATION — GUIDE ONLY
  1. The Rural Fire Development Framework (RFDF) has created several opportunities by modernising and enhancing the competencies previously covered under the Volunteer Learning Development Framework (VLDF). Notably, the Firefighter Advanced Skills (FAS) segment within the RFDF consolidates critical knowledge necessary for those aiming to become Crew Leaders (CL).
  2. To optimally equip firefighters for Crew Leader training under the RFDF, this site contains a preparatory checklist for brigade leadership. This measure addresses the transition from VLDF to RFDF, ensuring firefighters are well-prepared to succeed in Crew Leader training, especially those who have previously attained competencies under VLDF. The checklist serves as a tool to aid in advancing to Crew Leader positions or refreshing existing skills.
  3. These questions help brigade leaders assess if a volunteer is ready for Crew Leader training, aiming to maximise their chances of success. Contact your Training Support if you have any questions.

RFDF CREW LEADER

  1. The Crew Leader Skills program introduces leadership concepts, developing skills in:
    • fireground supervision
    • bushfire control methods
    • planning and conducting basic prescribed burns
  2. Firefighters who have completed Firefighter Advanced Skills may enrol into the Crew Leader Skills program, which will award ten units of competency. The course material is available through QFES Gateway.
  3. The Crew Leader program is designed to be completed in order. RFVC315 is the final step and requires supporting evidence of planning, conducting and post incident or hazard reduction burn activities. Participants are required to have successfully completed PUAFIR303 – Suppress Wildfire prior to RFVC315.
    • RFVC305 – Incident Supervision
    • RFVC310 – Bushfire Control
    • RFVC315 – Prescribed Burning – Basic
  4. The Crew Leader Program is flexible and is designed to support local requirements.

CREW LEADER PREPARATION

  1. The RFDF Crew Leader program assumes a level of learning and experience, particularly the knowledge base of the RFDF Firefighter Advanced Skills Program:
    • RFVP200 – Firefighter Advanced Skills
    • RFVC205 – Hazard Mitigation
    • RFVC210 – Scene Preservation
    • VESC105 – Operational Mapping and Urban Navigation
    • RFVC215 – Operational Driving
  2. There is also a range of short Micro Learning opportunities that can support development.
  3. The questions below are provided as a guideline to help, support and guide Crew Leader preparation. They are not an entry requirement and do not prevent a firefighter from participating in the Crew Leader course. Their purpose is to highlight areas where further study may be useful, reduce stress by clarifying expectations and give you the best chance of success.
  4. An Unsure or Not confident response identifies an area where further study, supported practice or operational exposure may help before the formal course.
