100% Volunteer?
Every time you see a yellow fire truck drive past with the words Rural Fire Service on the side, it’s important to remember something simple, every person on board is a volunteer (by choice).
They’re mums, dads, tradies, teachers, farmers, students, retirees, everyday people who have chosen to serve their community. What they all share is a commitment to training and professionalism.
Our volunteers are trained to nationally recognised standards through the hold the same qualifications as any other fire service, however, our focus is rural operations (away from any formed roads). That means they are qualified, assessed, and ready to perform to the highest safety and operational standards whenever the call comes.
And that call can come anytime, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Whether it’s a local grassfire, a major bush fire, a house under threat, or a deployment hundreds of kilometres away, our volunteers step forward. Queensland brigades have a proud history of answering the call not just across the state, but across Australia, and even beyond our borders when help is needed most.
They do it not for pay, not for recognition, but because they care about their community. Every time they roll out, they bring with them a deep sense of purpose and pride, ordinary people doing extraordinary things.
So next time you see those yellow trucks, give them a wave. Behind every one is a volunteer, trained, professional, and ready to protect.
